Module 8: Google Antigravity
What is an agentic IDE?
Up to now, you have used AI like a very fast pen-friend. You ask, it answers, you copy, you paste. In this module the AI gets its own hands. That is powerful, and it changes your job from "typist" to "manager and reviewer".
Three rungs on the ladder
Think of AI coding tools as a ladder with three rungs.
Rung 1: a chat in a browser. The Gemini app or AI Studio. You paste code in, it writes code out, you copy it into a file. It works anywhere, even on a phone. You have been doing this since the recipe.
Rung 2: AI inside your editor. The AI can see your whole project, not only what you pasted. It suggests the next line as you type. No more copying between windows. GitHub Copilot in VS Code is the common example. Module 9 covers it.
Rung 3: agents that build for you. You describe the job. The AI makes a plan, creates and edits files, runs commands in the terminal, opens a browser, looks at the result, and fixes what it sees. Then it shows you what it did.
Google Antigravity lives on rung 3.
What "agent" and "IDE" mean
An IDE (integrated development environment) is a code editor with extra tools built in: a file list, a terminal, a way to run and debug your code. VS Code is an IDE.
An agent is an AI model that can use tools in a loop. A tool is an action it is allowed to take, such as "read this file", "write this file", "run this terminal command" or "open this web page". The loop looks like this:
- Read your request.
- Decide the next step.
- Use a tool.
- Look at what happened.
- Repeat until the job looks done, or until it needs you.
So an agentic IDE is an editor where the AI does not only suggest. It acts.
Remember the intern
In The one rule we said: AI is a fast, confident intern. It has read every book. It has never worked a day.
With a chat box, the intern can only hand you notes. With an agent, the intern has the keys to your laptop. It can create 20 files in a minute. It can also delete a folder, install a package you did not ask for, or open a website you would never visit. It will do all of this with the same calm confidence.
That is why this module spends as much time on reviewing and permissions as on building. The rule from the start of the course still holds: never ship code you cannot explain. An agent makes that rule harder to follow, because it produces so much so fast. Your job is to slow it down at the right moments.
What Google Antigravity is (October 2026)
Google launched Antigravity in November 2025 as an AI code editor with a second "Agent Manager" window for running agents. In May 2026 Google released Antigravity 2.0 and split it into a family of products. As of October 2026 there are four:
| Product | What it is | Used in this course? |
|---|---|---|
| Antigravity app | A desktop app built around agents. You start conversations inside "projects", review plans and changes, and approve actions. It replaced the old Agent Manager. | Yes, this is our main tool |
Antigravity CLI (agy) |
The same agent in your terminal | Module 9 |
| Antigravity IDE | The original editor, still available as a separate download | Optional |
| IDE extensions | Antigravity inside VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Zed and Xcode (added in August 2026) | Optional |
All of them use the same Google sign-in, and your plan's models and limits come with that sign-in. You will hear people call any of them "Antigravity". (Google also has an Antigravity SDK for programmers who build their own agents. You will not need it.)
Under the hood, the agent runs on Google's Gemini models. On the free plan the main model is Gemini 3.8 Flash, as of October 2026. Lesson 6 covers models and limits.
Many YouTube videos and blog posts from late 2025 and early 2026 show the old single-window editor. If a tutorial does not match your screen, check its date.
What the agent can do for you
- Turn a short description into a written implementation plan you can read and comment on before any code is written.
- Create and edit files across your project.
- Run terminal commands, such as starting a local server, if you allow it.
- Open a separate Chrome browser, click through your page, take screenshots and record a short video of what it tested.
- Write a walkthrough at the end that sums up what it changed.
These outputs are called artifacts. Lesson 4 is all about them.
What it cannot do for you
- Know what you meant if you did not say it.
- Guarantee the code is correct, safe or right for your project.
- Learn for you. If you let it do everything, you finish the project and know nothing. Interviewers notice.
Can you use it?
As of October 2026, Antigravity's official FAQ and download page say you need:
- A laptop or desktop. Windows 10 (64-bit) or later, macOS 12 (Monterey) or later, or a recent Linux. There is no phone app for building. (Google's own Googlebook laptops get it from the Play Store; ordinary Android phones do not.)
- A personal Google account in a supported country. India is on the list.
- Age 18 or above. Antigravity is not available to users under 18, and you may be asked to verify your age. If you are 17, skip ahead to module 9 and come back later; GitHub Copilot and the browser chat tools still work for you.
- An internet connection. The agent runs on Google's servers, so it uses data. Use Wi-Fi where you can.
It has a free plan with a weekly limit on agent use. Google AI Pro (which some Jio users get free, see this lesson) gives higher limits.
How this module works
- This lesson. What it is.
- Install and sign in, and set safe permissions before your first task.
- A tour of the app, and where the old "editor" and "Agent Manager" went.
- Plans, artifacts and review. How to read what the agent gives you, and how to say no.
- A guided build. You rebuild the Project 2 habit tracker with an agent, prompt by prompt.
- Limits and tips. Quotas, which model to pick, and what to do when you run out.
Your task
Check whether you can use Antigravity, before you download anything.
- Find your operating system version. On Windows: Settings > System > About. On a Mac: Apple menu > About This Mac.
- Confirm it meets the minimum above.
- Confirm you are 18 or older and have a personal Gmail account you will keep for years.
- Check that Google Chrome is installed. The agent's browser features use Chrome.
- Write down any "no" answers. If there is one, read lesson 6's section on alternatives and module 9.
